Driver Licence OCR works by capturing an image of the driver’s license using a scanner or a camera-equipped mobile device. We can (optionally) check whether an Australian licence was validly issued and is current by referencing the Department of Home Affairs DVS (Document Verification System) in real time. New Zealand licences can similarly be validated.

Yes, the IDV OCR Engine successfully scans the transparent strip of a Victorian Driver Licence, even with a dark background (not black). This also applies to other similar Driver Licence designs with transparent strips. For example, Tasmanian Driver Licence or the Northern Territory Driver Licence.

We’ve now fine-tuned the results to be very accurate, regardless of where it is placed and even if it is on an angle. Please note that the results are dependent on the condition of the sticker – the sticker is paper, not plastic and is prone to wear and tear. The text must be human readable to be processed.
