International student and staff visa status checks

Universities can verify the identity and on-board staff and students in a quick and cost-effective manner with document validation and automated Visa status checking.

Study visas can be verified by:

  1. Check online using our web-based tool accessible through any browser on any PC, Mac, tablet or ‘phone. The visa status is retrieved from the Department of Home Affairs VEVO database by submitting passport details either manually or by submitting an image of the front page of students’ passports. In the case of submitting a passport image, the passport can (optionally) be validated as part of the process. Results are returned as a PDF audit report.
  2. To do multiple concurrent checks, queries can be submitted using our secure file transfer utility. This allows up to 5,000 checks per day in batch processing mode by submitting either a file of subject passport data (CSV or Excel format) extracted from student records or a folder of passport images. Results are returned as a CSV or Excel file and optionally an audit PDF report for each subject. Where passport images are submitted, the passport can be optionally validated as part of the process.
  3. Using our API, both data and image queries can be initiated from your legacy system. This is a white-labelled solution where automated VEVO checks can be performed without interrupting existing workflows. This solution requires code modifications to your legacy system.

Overview of identity validation for Financial Institutions

The majority of “identity validation” providers actually validate nothing. Most just capture an image of an identity document and automate the workflow involved in capturing and storing this data.

IDV uses the ICAO methodology (International Civil Aviation Organisation – responsible for the standards for passport design and manufacture). This methodology is primarily used by border control agencies to identify false and altered identity documents.

Unless every “agent”, (or in a bank’s case bank teller), responsible for checking identity documents is a trained forensic document expert, then the organisation effectively does not know who it’s customers are. They are simply “matching” the photo on an apparent identity document with the person producing it. If the “teller” thinks the person matches the photo on the document, the account will be opened.

A research study by an Australian University shows the ability of human beings to see another human being IN PERSON and to accurately determine whether they are the person whose face appears in the photo on an identity document which they show is 50%.

“Certified” copies of identity documents are also of limited value unless the certifying official is a fully trained forensic document expert.
