Australian Digital Driver Licence Verification — Digital ID and Wallet
IDV Pacific now supports digital driver licence verification. Whether your organisation needs to verify an Australian digital driver licence from Queensland, NSW Photo Card or any other jurisdiction, our scanner integration and solutions are ready.
What Is a Digital Driver Licence?
A digital driver licence — also known as a mobile driver's licence or mDL — is a secure, government-issued version of your traditional plastic licence stored on a smartphone. Instead of carrying a physical card, holders can present their digital driver licence through a dedicated app, with stronger data protections through selective disclosure.
The Digital Licence App lets you store and present your driver licence as a verifiable ID. Documents such as your driver's licence appear alongside other records, turning your smartphone into a trusted wallet. Simply open and present — no plastic card required.

How to Access and Verify a Digital Driver Licence Using Our App
IDV Pacific's platform makes it simple to check any mDL presented to your organisation. Our system supports both in-person and remote workflows, underpinned by ISO 18013-5 and ISO 18013-7 standards.
Selective disclosure lets holders share only what's needed — confirm age without revealing other personal information. A core feature of the ISO standard giving individuals greater control over their data.
Digital Driver Licence Rollout Across Australian States
All states and territories have committed to adopting the digital driver licence standard for secure identity verification.
Queensland Live
Queensland launched its ISO 18013-5 compliant digital driver licence programme in November 2023, with over 1.2 million holders now carrying their mDL. The system supports marine documentation, age verification and trade certifications.
New South Wales Pilot
NSW kicked off its photo card pilot in February 2025. The programme enables residents to create a document using biometric checks. Full ISO compliance is expected by late 2026.
Victoria, SA & Beyond TBA
Victoria, South Australia, WA, Tasmania and the remaining territories have committed at the commonwealth level but have not announced timelines. IDV Pacific will support all from day one.
Security and Privacy: How Your Digital Driver Licence Stays Protected
Security and privacy are a top priority in the design of every digital driver licence system. The standard ensures that personal information is stored securely on the holder's mobile device — not in a central database. This architecture limits the information you share to only what is necessary.
Cryptographic Authentication
Advanced certificate chains and end-to-end encryption prevent theft, fraud and unauthorised access.
Selective Disclosure
Holders control which fields are shared. Confirm age without exposing other data.
Cyber Security by Design
IDV Pacific takes cyber security seriously. Our platform protects both the holder and the verifier at every step.
On-Device Storage
Data lives on the holder's device — not in a central government database. Protected by design.
ISO Standards, Travel Readiness and Global Interoperability
The mDL ecosystem is built on the ISO 18013-5 standard for in-person checks and the proposed ISO 18013-7 standard for remote online checks. These standards ensure interoperability across jurisdictions, meaning an mDL issued in one state can be recognised in another. This alignment with international frameworks enables travel use cases: the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) already accepts mDLs at airport checkpoints, alongside traditional passport documents.
ISO 18013-5 — In-Person
- Local proximity verification via NFC, Bluetooth and QR code
- Selective data disclosure for road safety and identity checks
- Cryptographic authentication of mDL origin
- Offline capability for remote locations
- Adopted across Queensland, U.S. states and EU pilots
ISO 18013-7 — Remote / Online
- Internet-based verification for KYC and onboarding
- End-to-end encryption with session binding
- Enables cross-platform remote validation
- Supports PDF audit trail export for compliance
- Development of the digital ecosystem for passport-level assurance
IDV Pacific's platform supports both ISO standards. Our Thales scanner integration handles in-person checks, while our SDK enables remote mDL validation. The verifier receives only the data fields needed — an optional selective disclosure approach that protects data while ensuring road safety compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Digital Driver Licences
A digital driver licence (also called mDL) is a standards-based version of a traditional driving document. It is stored in dedicated software on a smartphone and can be presented using NFC, Bluetooth or QR code technology. The digital driver licence is cryptographically signed, making it more difficult to forge than a physical card.
Queensland has the most mature programme, live since November 2023. NSW launched its photo card pilot in February 2025. Victoria, South Australia and other states and territories have committed to the standard.
With IDV Pacific, you can verify a digital driver licence using a Thales CR2000 or AT10K-m scanner, or through our upcoming mDL Verifier SDK. The holder presents their digital driver licence, your system reads the cryptographic signature, and you receive confirmed data.
Yes. The mDL standard uses cryptographic authentication, certificates and selective disclosure to protect personal information. Data is stored on the holder's device, not in a central database.
The ISO 18013-5 standard is designed for interoperability, so a credential issued in one jurisdiction can be verified in another. The U.S. already accepts mDLs at TSA checkpoints, and the EU is building mDL support into its wallet framework.
IDV Pacific validates over 6,000 international identity documents including passports, licences, visas and national ID cards.
