Capture, interrogate and authenticate any ID document.
Thales document readers for passports, ID cards and mobile licences, with local support across Australia and the Pacific.
What a document reader actually does
A dedicated reader does four things a phone camera or a flatbed scanner cannot do reliably: image the whole document, read its data, prove it is genuine, and hand it straight to your systems.
Captures the document
Photographs the full page or card in visible, infrared and ultraviolet light in a single pass, at high resolution.
Reads the data
Pulls the MRZ, barcode, printed fields and the contactless chip, so records fill themselves with no manual typing.
Proves it is genuine
Inspects the security features under IR and UV and validates the chip, so tampered and fake documents are caught, not just read.
Feeds your systems
Sends clean, verified data straight to your app, POS or the IDV platform over USB, LAN or the cloud.
A flatbed scan is a photo; a reader, verification
Plenty of front desks still photograph IDs on a flatbed or a phone. That captures an image, but it cannot see the security features or read the chip. Photos show how it looks. Readers prove what it is.

Flatbed or phone photo
Image onlySix ways a reader interrogates a document
Each spoke is one way a dedicated reader inspects a document in a single pass. The more light sources, signals and the chip a reader has, the more it can prove a document is genuine, not just legible.

Frequently asked questions
Choosing and integrating Thales document readers with IDV Pacific.
Because a flatbed or a phone photo only captures an image. A dedicated reader also reads the chip, inspects the infrared and ultraviolet security features and fills your fields automatically, so it catches fakes a photo cannot and removes manual typing. Anywhere you actually need to trust the ID, the reader pays for itself in speed and in the fraud you never see.
It depends on the document and the setting. For passports and full-page travel documents, choose a full-page reader (QS2000, AT9000 Mk2, AT10K-m or AT10Ki-m). For ID cards at a counter, a card reader (CR2000, CR5400 or CR5400i) is enough. For codeline-only capture, the CR100M swipe reader is the smallest option. Tell us your use case and we will recommend a model.
Level 1 is visible white-light capture, enough to photograph and OCR a document. Level 2 adds invisible-light inspection: infrared and ultraviolet, which reveal security features that confirm a document is genuine, not just readable.
Selected readers support mobile driver licences to the ISO 18013-5 standard over NFC: the AT10K-m and AT10Ki-m, with the RF-equipped CR2000 as an option. This is the same verification stack behind our mDL product. Confirm current model availability with IDV.
The AT9000 Mk2 is a proven full-page reader that is now being superseded by the AT10K-m. We still list it for existing fleets and spares; for new deployments we recommend the AT10K-m or the cloud-ready AT10Ki-m.
Yes. Most readers are IDV Hub Manager compatible, so you can monitor status, log compliance and push configuration to every reader across every venue from one hosted portal. The networked I-Series models add direct SaaS connectivity and pool mode.
Through the Thales Document Reader SDK (Windows, Linux, macOS) or a cloud REST API that exposes USB readers as web endpoints. You can also pair them with FoxID for AI-driven OCR text extraction.
